Blending is when the boundary between headmates becomes blurred, and it can be hard to tell them apart, or even who is present. This can happen to the active fronters, or to anyone else who is co-conscious at the time.[3] It was originally coined to refer to "the moment at which the personality states or fragments temporarily come together as a single entity, either spontaneously or with the help of a therapist."[4]

Dissociation — especially depersonalization — is when one has confusion about their own identity, which can happen outside of a plural context. Blending is often associated with dissociation.

When the blending directly results in a new identity being created from the temporary fusion of headmates, the resulting individual is referred to as a blend.
