dream-combing refers to the stored memories of dreams in a specific part of the inner world that gets "combed" (or looked over) for new system members

there's usually a memory bank of stored dreams [fragments of dreams; shards, partial memories, etc...] that an alter is tasked to go over [not as consistently, but that is all right] to welcome new system members into the system

some dream-seekers may go to another plane of existence [either outside, or inside the headspace] where the dreams are still happening to meet with the people there and welcome any new members, if any
