The main is a headmate who is considered by the rest of the system to be one the main or central influences on the system. This doesn't necessarily mean they front often. There can be more than one main.[1]
A main can be a leader, teacher, or another authoritative figure that has an influence over the system.[2] They may also be someone that others draw energy from. Main’s can also be the member everyone takes care of, or the caretaker taking care of everyone.

The host is the headmate who is most responsible for fronting or day-to-day activity, which is not necessarily the same as the main(s).
The core is the headmate with the closest ties to the pre-plural self. This is also not necessarily the same as the main(s).
Median systems sometimes have a central personality that the members have in common, and add their personality on top of it.
