Headmates are non-verbal when they don't or can't speak or write. Some can understand languages, but they can't speak/write using those languages. They can often use emoji or images to interact with others. Being non-verbal can be either a temporary state or a permanent attribute.
Some headmates may be non-verbal as a result of trauma, just as singlets can. They may have been instructed to stay quiet, or developed it as a defense mechanism. Others may be expressing a neurodivergent trait.

Some individuals are verbalflux, or varying in verbality between non-verbal, semi-verbal, and fully verbal. Nonhuman headmates, especially animals, may be non-verbal and only communicate through animal noises.
