Plurality is when one body is shared by multiple headmates. A group of headmates sharing a body is called a system. Different systems and headmates experience plurality in very different ways. They might think of it in spiritual or non-spiritual ways, be median or partitionary, and may have a small or large amount of headmates.

Headmates are normally thought of as different people from each other. They can have their own names and pronouns, want different things, and like different things.

Others normally talk about a whole system using plural pronouns like we, us, them and they. It is best to ask how they would like to be talked about, as some may like others to talk about them in a different way. They might want to be seen as their own people, part of a bigger whole, helpers of the core or host, and many other things.

Causes[edit | edit source]

Many different things can make someone plural. Examples of this are:

  • Systems can come from trauma, because of difficult events in their life.
  • Systems can be made on purpose through tuplamancy or other processes.
  • Spiritual systems believe they exist because of spiritual reasons.
  • Systems can come from other causes, which most people call endogenic.
  • Mixed-origin systems come from more than one different causes.

Symbols[edit | edit source]

The plural rings were made by Tracee of ouregaiya and/or Iris of Astraea in October 2011 and were shared across the internet with Email and Livejournal. [1]

Many plural communities agreed on using the ampersand (&) as a symbol for plurality, and some systems like to be called "you&" or simply use ampersands to talk about themselves.

The treblesand was created for use by any kind of plural person. [2]

Related Terms[edit | edit source]
