Ethereal refers to a headmate who seems to be made of starlight, or emit light from their skin, hair or eyes. They also may be in some way related to starforms, gods, small gods, spirits or godlikes, but it is not required.
Ethereal headmates are not exclusively gods, spirits, starforms and the like, but they tend to be strongly linked to godliness, magic, or the elements, and as such are often considered godlike or magical.
These headmates may also be ethereal-flux, meaning that they are sometimes ethereals and sometimes not.
