A Layered Front describes a system that has multiple sections to its front. Sections in the case for these system are when there is different amounts of control a member can have within these sections. A example could be that the first layer has all the forms of control like physical control, emotional control, the ability to speak, etc. While the second layer could be similar but they lose the ability to do physical things. The amount of layers and layers of control matters system to system, none will be the exact same.

Members can either join the front in a certain layer, like a member joins the second layer. But members can also be forced around layer to layer, for example a frontstuck host who is always in the first layer, could possibly kicked to another layer due to stress, panic, or other strong emotions. Members moving layer to layer can matter system to system, Moving between front layers can be conscious or involuntary, and as seamless or harsh as a switch. This does not mean that the member is no longer in front just means they lost or gained a certain amount of control over the body.
