A prioritizer is a headmate whose role is to help with another headmate or the system's stress. They might only be designated to help a specific headmate, a group of headmates, or the whole system. A system can also have more than one prioritizer, even if one or more of the prioritizers help the whole system. The term was inspired by prioritization.

A prioritizer's role might manifest in many ways;

  • Resolving conflicts
  • Reducing contact with the source(s) of stress
  • Redirecting the headmate/system's attention elsewhere until they relax
  • Fronting until the source of the stress is gone or resolved

However, it is not limited to any of the above.

A prioritizer may continuously stop a stressed headmate from fronting, or take over front when they try to interact with the source(s) of stress. This can be intentional or unintentional. This can sometimes lead to them becoming frontstuck.

A prioritizer may also be considered a protector, a persecutor, a janusian, or another similar role(s) if they feel those roles also apply to them due to being a prioritizer.
