Superimpose are a type of headmate that has a stable sense of identity, yet also has multiple versions of their self or states they change between.[1]

Typically, a superimpose is also unaware of which self or state they inhabit at any given moment, though this is not always the case. For some, discovering which one it is may simply require effort and introspection. In other cases, it may be entirely or mostly impossible to tell, and any changes are only identifiable in retrospect.

Superimpose could be viewed comparatively through the lens of a literal definition of Multiple Personality Disorder, as rather than having multiple identities of their own - which would be better defined by being or having a subsystem - they experience changes in personality and self-perception. However, this doesn't mean the origin of superimpose headmates can't be or isn't dissociative. In fact, superimpose are often dissociation holders, especially for identity alteration and identity confusion.
