Headmates may experience a period of adjustment after coming to front that can last for hours or even days. During this time, the headmate may feel uncomfortable in the body, or unaccustomed to the system's life. The feeling may be akin to breaking in new shoes, or wearing someone else's clothes.

This period of discomfort, or switchlag, may be experienced by headmates that haven't fronted in a while, or that have switched in after another headmate has been fronting for a while. It may be situational, or specific to a headmate or system.
