A system tag is text that a system uses to identify themselves in chats where each headmate may have their own account or proxy. They place the tag in the display name of each of their headmates.

Common styles for system tags include listing the full name of the system, an abbreviation, or an emoji or other Unicode symbol. Frequently, the tag includes a separator to set it apart from the display name of the headmate, such as a pipe character |, or brackets such as [], (), {}.

PluralKit is a bot used for proxying, which has a setting for system tags. This allows systems to change their tags without having to update the display name of each member separately. Tupperbox does a similar thing, allowing for separate groups to have their own tags, which can help with sidesystems and subsystems.
